Treat yo self!

— Parks and Recreation  ·  2009

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a permission slip shouted as a battle cry: one day a year, guilt is cancelled and the credit card comes out. Tom and Donna turn consumerism into a sacred ritual, and the episode's twist, Ben treating himself to a Batman costume, shows the joke has a soft centre about looking after yourself. Fans now quote it every payday, and "Treat Yo Self" became a real-world shorthand for self-indulgence.

In "Pawnee Rangers" (Parks and Recreation, season 4, episode 4, aired 13 October 2011), Tom Haverford and Donna Meagle take their annual day off to spend money on themselves: luxury goods, food and pampering. Donna notices Ben Wyatt eating lunch alone and invites him along, and Tom protests. The chant is their rallying cry for the whole outing. Ben struggles to enjoy it, but when Donna tells him to treat himself his way, he buys a Batman costume, then admits how bad he has felt since his split from Leslie. Tom and Donna tell him they have his back.
