Are you crying? / I am not crying, okay? I'm allergic to jerks!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Andy is a man who cannot hide a feeling, and this is his purest moment: caught mid-tantrum by a smug teenager, he reaches for the most ridiculous excuse available and delivers it at full volume. The joke works because he is sincerely wounded and sincerely defensive at once. Fans quote it whenever someone is visibly upset and denying it, and as a cheerful reply to anyone being a jerk.

Spoilers for Parks and RecreationShow the scene

In the Season 2 Halloween episode "Greg Pikitis" (episode 7), Leslie Knope is certain that teenager Greg Pikitis, her self-declared arch-nemesis, has toilet-papered the parks office, and he is brought in for questioning. Andy, newly working for the parks department, joins the interrogation as an FBI agent called Burt Macklin, but Greg is so cruel to him that Andy bursts into tears. Greg sneers "Are you crying?" and Andy fires back with the allergy excuse. Leslie takes over, and Greg's mother soon turns up to take him home.
