Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is the show's tenderest use of 1980s slang: a girl who learned the world from television and one lucky friendship answers a gruff father figure with the coolest word she has, and he plays along. It is a one-word summary of Eleven's season-2 arc of trying on a life of her own, and it is quoted by fans as her signature approval.

Spoilers for Stranger ThingsShow the scene
In 'Chapter Nine: The Gate' (season 2, 2017), Hopper and Eleven talk after he comes out of the tunnels: she tells him she has seen her mother, he apologises for lying to her about it, and they agree they have both acted irresponsibly. Hopper then compliments her new look, picked up during her stay with Kali's crew in 'Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister'. Eleven answers with the word, and Hopper agrees. She had first used it in that earlier episode.
