Eleven

Friends don't lie.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Eleven has been taught by the lab that the rules are whatever Papa says; the friendship rule is the first she chooses for herself, learned from Mike. It is blunt, childlike and absolute, which is why it hits so hard whenever someone fibs to protect her. Fans quote it for the Stranger Things era of loyal kid friendships, usually with the flat Eleven delivery.

Spoilers for Stranger ThingsShow the scene

Stranger Things, season one, "Chapter Three: Holly, Jolly" (2016), set in Hawkins, Indiana in November 1983. Eleven, the silent escaped girl the boys are hiding, has just rescued herself from the lab and ridden off on Mike's bike. In the woods she notices a bruise on Mike's chin, and when he tries to brush it off as nothing she tells him that friends don't lie. Mike confesses the truth about the bullies at school, and Eleven says she understands. It becomes her creed: she repeats it through the series, and in season four, in Lenora, she yells it at Will in the middle of a bad school day.
