Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Bob is the show's gentlest hero: a man with no powers, a lot of jokes and a puzzle-box heart. The words start as a nervous bit of self-mockery and end as his bravest line, which is why fans still say them, and why the drawing on the fridge hurts.

Spoilers for Stranger ThingsShow the scene

Bob Newby, Joyce's boyfriend in season 2 (2017), first says it in 'Chapter Six: The Spy', in a quiet moment with Joyce while the two talk about the paperwork the lab made them sign. He says it again, and it is the version fans remember, in 'Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer', when the Hawkins Lab is under lockdown and he volunteers to restore the computer system because he alone knows BASIC. 'It's gonna be okay,' he tells Joyce, then goes after the doors. He gets the system back, but is attacked by Demodogs on the way out. A month later Will's drawing of him as a superhero hangs on the Byers fridge.
