Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A twelve-year-old's awkward apology to a girl who can slam a door shut with her mind: funny, sincere and slightly scared. The line captures the show's tone, a group of kids meeting something impossible with the manners they have, and it marks the point where Eleven stops being a stranger to the Party.

In 'Chapter Two: The Weirdo on Maple Street' (season 1, 2016), the boys bring the girl they found in the woods home to Mike's house. Lucas, who does not trust her, tries to leave to tell Mike's mother, but the door slams shut on its own. The boys realise she has powers, and Dustin offers the apology below. Mike adds that they were only scared earlier and that they will not tell anyone about her.
