When life hurts you, because it will, remember the hurt. The hurt is good. It means you're out of that cave.

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
This is Hopper's whole character in a few lines: a gruff man saying that pain is proof you have left the cave, and that the hurt is a sign of growth. Fans quote it far beyond the show as a line of comfort, and it lands because the letter is the speech he never got to say aloud.

Spoilers for Stranger ThingsShow the scene
The words come near the end of 'Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt' (season 3, 2019), and they are Hopper's, from beyond his apparent death. After the mall falls, Joyce folds up Hopper's police coat and finds the speech he wrote for Eleven and Mike inside, which she gives to Eleven. In it Hopper thanks her for helping him love again, tells her to keep growing up, and asks her to keep her door open three inches, the rule he set in the season's first episode. A sobbing Eleven reads on as the Byers family and she leave Hawkins.
