Homer

Oh, they have the internet on computers now!

— The Simpsons  ·  1989

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Homer's joke is the late-90s panic about the Internet in one sentence: a man discovering, with wonder, that the thing everyone keeps talking about lives on the machine he does not own. It still gets quoted whenever someone is amusingly behind on a technology, and by people about their own parents. The Gates cameo that follows is part of why this episode is fan-favourite satire about the dot-com era.

The line is from "Das Bus" (season 9, first aired 15 February 1998, written by David X. Cohen), in the episode's second story. While Bart, Milhouse and the rest are marooned on a desert island, Homer is trying to make a fortune on the Internet after learning that Ned Flanders runs a home business. He has no product, no plan and, as the episode jokes, no computer. As the island kids start their hunt, the story cuts to Homer, who marvels aloud that the Internet is now on computers. Marge then announces that Bill Gates is at the door about the company, CompuGlobalHyperMeganet.
