I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Brockman is the news anchor who will say anything to stay on the right side of power, and here he surrenders live on air to a species he has misunderstood. The cowardice is the joke. It became the template for the "I, for one, welcome our new ... overlords" meme, trotted out whenever computers, politicians or anything else seems about to take over.

Spoilers for The SimpsonsShow the scene

In "Deep Space Homer" (The Simpsons, season 5, aired February 24, 1994; written by showrunner David Mirkin), NASA picks Homer to fly on the Space Shuttle to lift its flagging TV ratings. Homer smuggles potato chips aboard and, while eating them in orbit, breaks an ant farm; the escaped ants wreck the shuttle's navigation system. Newsman Kent Brockman, covering the mission on live television, becomes convinced that giant space ants have taken over the shuttle and are about to conquer the Earth. He promptly pledges his allegiance to the new insect overlords.
