Original artwork, not a still
My fellow Americans, as a young boy I dreamed of being a baseball. But tonight I say we must move forward, not backward! Upward, not forward! And always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!!!
— The Simpsons · 1989
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Kang, doing a Clinton impression, delivers a speech that collapses into nonsense. Dreaming of being a baseball and moving 'upward, not forward' sounds like political rhetoric with the meaning removed. The joke is the grand patriotic tone wrapped around twirling, which sounds like freedom.
