Austin Powers

Allow myself to introduce... myself.

— Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery  ·  1997

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is in the stiff, over-formal grammar: Austin introduces himself as if someone else were doing it, a perfect picture of a man whose self-regard needs a master of ceremonies. It captures the whole character, a shabby-smooth gentleman spy who treats any room as a stage. Fans reach for it whenever they walk into a room or have to introduce themselves in an overblown way.

Spoilers for Austin Powers: International Man of MysteryShow the scene

In Las Vegas, Austin and Vanessa are posing as a married couple while they follow Dr. Evil's front company, Virtucon, and they have been told its executives gamble in this casino. Number Two is playing blackjack, and Austin asks if he may join him. Sitting down, Austin announces 'Allow myself to introduce... myself' and gives their cover names, Ritchie Cunningham and his wife Oprah. The hand that follows is the scene's real contest: Number Two secretly reads the next card through his eye patch. The film shot on the Las Vegas Strip, at casinos including the Riviera and the Stardust.
