Dr. Evil

Why must I be surrounded by frickin’ idiots?

— Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery • 1997

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The boss who blames the staff is the oldest joke in the villain's lair, and Dr. Evil sharpens it: he is a Bond villain in the Blofeld mould who is as petty as an office manager, and the prim "frickin'" stands in for a curse. It became the film's signature insult, muttered in offices after any meeting where nothing got done.

Spoilers for Austin Powers: International Man of MysteryShow the scene

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997). It is Dr. Evil's first speaking scene, in his underground lair, where he has gathered the world's deadliest assassins and scolds them because every one of them has failed to kill Austin Powers. Warning that Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset when he is angry, he ejects most of the henchmen from the room and asks the question. He keeps only Number Two, Frau Farbissina and Mustafa, and sets out his plan to finish off Britain's top secret agent. The villain is Mike Myers's parody of Bond's Blofeld.
