A lava-lit lair seen from low: a high-backed swivel chair turned away at the head of a conference table, a hairless sphynx cat glaring from its arm, lava lamps and a rocket behind.

Dr. Evil

When Dr. Evil gets angry, Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset. And when Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset... people die!

— Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery ‧ 1997

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the Bond-villain speech played with a cat and a very long chain of command: Dr. Evil's temper reaches the cat, and the cat's temper reaches everybody else. The punchline lands because the threat is real. The structure ("when X gets angry, Y gets upset") is endlessly reused, and it turned the hairless sphynx into a character fans know by name.

Spoilers for Austin Powers: International Man of MysteryShow the scene

In Dr. Evil's first scene, he addresses a gathering of the world's deadliest assassins in his underground lair, his face still hidden. Each of them has failed to kill Austin Powers, and he says so: that makes him angry, and when Dr. Evil gets angry, Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset. When Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset, "people die!" He then ejects most of the assembled henchmen from the room, keeping only Number Two, Frau Farbissina and Mustafa. The cat is hairless because of the freezing process; he was originally a long-haired white Persian, like Blofeld's cat in the Bond films.
