A psychedelic lair of swirling colour: a bald man in a grey suit gestures at a glowing green tank of ugly mutated sea bass beside an eye-patched henchman, a dangling cage above it.

Dr. Evil

I have one simple request, and that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A doomsday genius reduced to a tantrum over one gadget, while the staff paid to deliver it keep explaining why they cannot. The line mixes megalomania with an office row ('what I pay you people for?'), and the stretched, spluttering 'frickin'' made it the quotable heart of the film. It became shorthand for any wildly impractical request, and the series rewarded it by delivering real laser sharks in Goldmember.

Spoilers for Austin Powers: International Man of MysteryShow the scene

Austin and Vanessa have been captured at Virtucon's headquarters, and Dr. Evil, with his son Scott looking on, promises to put Austin in an easily escapable situation involving an overly elaborate and exotic death. He shows off a tank and boasts that all its sharks have laser beams attached to their heads. Number Two interrupts: sharks went on the endangered species list while Dr. Evil was frozen. Dr. Evil rages that his one simple request was sharks with laser beams, and the best Number Two can offer is mutated sea bass. In Goldmember, Scott finally gives his father a tank of real laser sharks.
