An underground lair glowing with lava: a bald man in a swivel chair faces a cracked Earth globe pierced by a drill, as a man in a purple velvet suit looks on from the shadows.

Dr. Evil

I'm still going to melt every city on the planet with liquid hot magma.

— Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery ‧ 1997

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is that the ransom was never the point: Dr. Evil wants the money and to melt the planet anyway. 'Liquid hot magma' is gloriously redundant, since magma is already liquid and hot, which is exactly how a pompous villain would say it. Fans quote it for any plan that is bigger and sillier than it needs to be, and the sequel, set inside a volcano, turned it into a running gag.

Spoilers for Austin Powers: International Man of MysteryShow the scene

In the lair, Dr. Evil introduces his son Scott to 'Daddy's nemesis' and sets up the escapable death trap. Austin asks whether he really expects the world to pay the ransom. Dr. Evil answers: no, he expects them to die. Even after they pay, he says, he will still melt every city on the planet with liquid hot magma. This is Project Vulcan, the scheme to drill a nuclear warhead into the Earth's core and set off volcanoes everywhere. 'Release the sharks!' follows. In The Spy Who Shagged Me, Dr. Evil tells Scott they are surrounded by liquid hot magma in his volcano lair.
