Austin Powers

I think you're shagadelic, baby. You're switched on. You're smashing.

— Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery ‧ 1997

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is an apology in the only language Austin has: Sixties slang piled up until it becomes flattery. 'Shagadelic' (a shag crossed with psychedelic) became the series' signature word, the thing every fan quotes. Switched on and smashing add the hippie-spy music, and the line still works as the sincere-but-ridiculous compliment you can say to anyone.

Spoilers for Austin Powers: International Man of MysteryShow the scene

In Las Vegas, Austin and Vanessa take the tour of Virtucon's headquarters. Vanessa has learned that Austin slept with Number Two's secretary, Alotta Fagina, and as the guide begins the welcome she asks, 'Do you think she's prettier than me?' Austin answers 'Who?' and, after 'You know who,' 'Oh, the Italian bird.' He calls her rancid and offers a string of Sixties compliments: shagadelic, switched on, smashing. The tour then carries on with Virtucon's steel, petroleum products and volatile chemicals.
