A swinging-London flat at night: a huge Scotsman in a kilt seen from behind, doughnuts and burgers circling his head, stands between a man in a blue suit and a woman in a yellow mini-dress.

Fat Bastard

I eat because I'm unhappy, and I'm unhappy because I eat. It's a vicious cycle.

— Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me • 1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A villain's monologue turns into a self-help confession and then turns back with a shrug. The whiplash is the joke: a sincere line about comfort eating, played by Mike Myers under heavy prosthetics, that fans quote as a fair summary of stress and snacks. It works because it is true enough to sting before the scene snaps back to being a Fat Bastard scene.

Spoilers for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged MeShow the scene

Near the end of The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), Fat Bastard turns up with a gun, aims it at Felicity and boasts that once you've had fat you never go back. Austin, furious, tells him to shut his mouth, then asks one question before they die: is he happy? Fat Bastard says of course he isn't, runs through his woes and breaks down: he can't stop eating, he eats because he is unhappy and is unhappy because he eats. It is a vicious cycle. He vows to forgive himself, then changes his mind and charges, and Felicity kicks him.
