Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Two syllables and a hand gesture, delivered with total conviction by a character who exists purely to be a party. Pop pop is Community in miniature: a throwaway background player turned into a cult favourite by a catchphrase, and fans still shout it as a reply to nothing at all.

Magnitude first appears in "Early 21st Century Romanticism" (season 2 episode 15, 10 February 2011), the Valentine's Day episode, at an impromptu party at Jeff's apartment. When Jeff asks who he is, the unexpected guest answers with his signature catchphrase and a raise-the-roof gesture. Luke Youngblood plays him through later seasons, and the wiki calls him a self-described one-man party whose name is a portmanteau of magnetic and attitude. He later sacrifices himself to a paintball grenade in "For a Few Paintballs More".
