Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Britta turns the group's favourite insult into her own punchline, trying to claim the word before anyone can use it on her. It is the best example of the show's running joke that every character gets a catchphrase, and a reliable shorthand among fans for any well-meant plan that falls over.

Spoilers for CommunityShow the scene

In "Herstory of Dance" (season 4 episode 8, 4 April 2013), Britta decides the school's Sadie Hawkins dance is anti-feminist and throws a rival one named after a woman's rights role model, getting the name wrong as Sophie B. Hawkins instead of Susan B. Anthony. Jeff tries to talk her into cancelling it, warning that students will expect the singer to appear, and asks her to admit she was wrong. Her reply is the line. The verb was coined in "Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps" (season 3 episode 5), where the group starts using her name to mean messing something up.
