Cowboys, Ted. They're a bunch of cowboys!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Cowboys here is the old Irish and British insult for cowboy builders: rogue tradesmen who throw up cheap, shoddy work. From a priest in a frenzy of perfectionism, it turns a loose shelf into a crime. Fans reach for it whenever a repair, a fitting or a flat-pack shelf has clearly been done by someone who should never have been handed tools.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

In "Rock-a-Hula Ted" (Series 2, 19 April 1996), Ted is judging the Lovely Girls contest, and a fussy priest, Father Liam Deliverance, is helping out. He has such high standards for craftsmanship that it tips into madness. Going through the parochial house, he declares the work shoddy and wrecks the bookshelf, a chair, the stereo and a door, each time blaming a bunch of cowboys. He later smashes a chair with a mallet at the contest itself, calling it shoddy workmanship. Dermot Crowley plays him, in this one episode only.
