I hear you're a racist now, Father!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Colm's deadpan is the sting: he talks about racism as a hobby Ted has taken up, and asks how he got into it. It sums up the show's village, where one foolish moment becomes everyone's business by teatime. Fans quote it as the answer to any rumour that has run far ahead of the facts, from a pub or a parish.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

Series 3 of Father Ted opens with "Are You Right There, Father Ted?" (13 March 1998). Back on Craggy Island, Ted is doing Mrs Doyle's chores after her fall from the roof. Bored, he puts a lampshade on his head and does a comic impression of a Chinese man, then spots a Chinese family watching from outside. Dougal tells him they are the Yin family, living in the island's old Chinatown area. After Ted's clumsy attempt to explain himself to them, he meets his parishioner Colm on the road, who cheerfully says he has heard Ted is a racist now and asks how he got interested in that sort of thing.
