At night in the lamp-lit sitting room, a tipsy, grinning Dougal grips an appalled Father Ted by the shoulders, while the hulking Father Fintan Stack lounges in an armchair by a record player with whiskey on the table.

Father Dougal

We're all going to heaven lads, wahey!

— Father Ted ‧ 1995

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Dougal, drunk for once, says the thing the show never quite does: he is delighted with his life, his friend and his job. The joyful "wahey" is pure Dougal innocence. Fans quote it as a cheerful toast, a pub cheer and a blessing on any bad idea.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

In "New Jack City" (series 2, 3 May 1996), Father Jack is sent to St Clabbert's hospital with Hairy Hands Syndrome, and the loutish Father Fintan Stack takes his place at the parochial house. Stack gets Dougal drunk on Jack's whiskey. Dougal then shakes Ted, tells him he is his best friend, says he loves being a priest, and adds the line. Ted, who has just found Dougal drunk, treats it as the last straw. Ted and Dougal later kidnap Jack back from the hospital.
