Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a playground loyalty test in a priest's collar: two rival 1990s bands, one right answer, and a wrong one that has to be recanted in a second. Dougal, who agrees with whoever spoke last, shows how badly he wants to be cool. Fans quote it for any forced choice with a correct side, and for the instant U-turn when you see you picked wrong.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

In "Old Grey Whistle Theft" (Series 2, 29 March 1996), Dougal falls under the spell of Father Damien "Damo" Lennon, a smoking, football-mad priest who behaves like a rebellious teenager. Outside the parochial house, Damo asks Dougal what he calls his fella, calls Ted an awful eejit, then asks which he prefers, Oasis or Blur. Dougal says Blur, sees Damo's shock and takes it back. Damo is in fact the thief of Mr Benson's whistle; his housemate Father Frost eventually drags him in by the ear to own up. Joe Rooney plays him.
