All of you! You think there’s someone just gonna drop money on ya?! Money they could use?! Well, there ain’t people like that. There’s just people like me.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Jayne, the crew's mercenary, has just been told that someone died for him, and the only way he can answer is to shout that the world has no saints in it. It is an ugly line from an ugly moment that is really a confession: he knows the crowd made a hero out of his worst deed. Fans quote it as the sharpest take on cynicism in the show, and as proof that the thug of Serenity had a conscience under the beard.

Spoilers for FireflyShow the scene

The closing act of "Jaynestown" (Firefly, first aired 18 October 2002). On the mud-farming moon of Higgins' Moon, Jayne finds himself celebrated as the Hero of Canton, because the cash he once jettisoned from a crashing getaway ship rained down on the poor mudders. His old partner Stitch Hessian turns up to expose the truth, and when Stitch fires at Jayne a young mudder leaps in front of the shot and dies. Jayne kills Stitch, then, kneeling over the boy, shouts at the crowd that there are no heroes, only people like him.
