Jayne's mock diary is the crew's view of Simon in two sentences: a doctor so stiff and prissy that his journal would be all pompous self and crazy sister. It is also dark comedy, because Simon and River really have been taken, and Jayne is the one enjoying the joke. Fans quote it as a perfect Jayne moment: crude, quick and secretly paying attention to everyone on the ship.

In "Safe" (Firefly, first aired 8 November 2002), Simon and River have been kidnapped by hill folk, a village that takes outsiders with useful skills, while Shepherd Book lies badly wounded and Mal has to choose whom to save. Elsewhere in the story Jayne is going through Simon's belongings, and he pretends to read out Simon's journal in a mocking voice. He turns a page and finishes the joke by reading that being kidnapped by hill folk, never to be seen again, was the best day ever.
