Bart

Ah, man! I’m only ten and I already have two mortal enemies!

— The Simpsons  ·  1989

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a gag about a ten-year-old's enemies list: one is a homicidal clown with a grudge, the other is a novelty-song radio host. The mismatch makes it funnier, and Dr. Demento's cameo is a small, affectionate in-joke for listeners who knew his show. Fans quote it for any pair of unrelated annoyances, and the Bart-versus-Bob feud is still the show's best long-running rivalry.

Spoilers for The SimpsonsShow the scene

In "Sideshow Bob Roberts" (season 6, aired 9 October 1994), Bart's old nemesis Sideshow Bob wins the Springfield mayoral election by rigging it, and the Simpsons' lives turn miserable. Early on, Lisa tells Bart that his mortal enemy is on the radio. Bart switches it on, hears the voice of radio host Dr. Demento, and flings the radio out the window. Lisa explains that she meant his other mortal enemy, Sideshow Bob, and Bart groans that he is ten years old and already has two.
