Stupid cats. With their fancy footwork and their crafty schemes to steal all my smelts!

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The speaker rants against cats, calling them stupid while grudgingly noting their fancy footwork and crafty schemes. The complaint is that all this cleverness is aimed at stealing the speaker's smelts. It is a comic, aggrieved outburst that treats cats like scheming rivals and thieves.
