Inside a volcano lair, a huge kilted man flings his arms wide and sings, musical notes floating over him, as a tiny figure in a grey suit and a bald man sit at the conference table.

Fat Bastard

I want my baby back, baby back, baby back ribs.

— Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me  ·  1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the series' favourite kind of joke: a real advertising jingle dropped into a cannibal threat, so you cannot hear one without the other afterwards. The tune is catchy enough for anyone to sing, and the gag locked the Chili's jingle to Fat Bastard in fans' minds.

Spoilers for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged MeShow the scene

In The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), the scene runs straight on from Mini-Me taking the mojo at Dr. Evil's volcano. Fat Bastard offers Dr. Evil a trade: he will hand over the mojo and keep no payment if he can have the baby, meaning Mini-Me, to eat. He then breaks into song, an echo of the Chili's baby back ribs commercials. The fan wiki notes the joke is an anachronism, since the scene is set in 1969 and the first Chili's did not open until 1975.
