At the kitchen table Dougal gestures in alarm while Ted listens with a pained, patient face over a teapot; behind them a Sacred Heart statue and a rack of drying black clerical shirts.

Father Ted

God Ted, I've heard about those cults. Everyone dressing in black... / No, Dougal, that's us. That's Catholicism you're talking about there.

— Father Ted • 1995

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Ted has just heard his own religion described as a sinister cult, and all he can do is sheepishly confirm it. The joke works for any institution seen from outside, so fans use it whenever a description sounds worse than it should in the speaker's own world.

In "Old Grey Whistle Theft" (series 2, 1996), the week Dougal falls under the spell of the rebellious young Father Damo, he confides a worry to Ted: he has heard about those cults, where everyone dresses in black and says the Lord is coming back to judge us all. Ted has to break it to him gently that this is them, and that Dougal is describing Catholicism. Dougal stays baffled by the whole business.
