At the Lovely Girls contest in a seaside marquee, Father Ted covers his mouth in embarrassment at the judges' microphone while the priest beside him stares aghast, as contestants in floral dresses and sashes walk round traffic cones on the stage.

Look out there Mary! Doesn't Mary have a lovely bottom?

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Ted's mistake is saying aloud what a priest should never even think, and the horrified recovery that follows is classic Ted: panic, then a hasty cover-up. It endures as a quotable for any gaffe made into a live microphone, and as the emblem of the Lovely Girls contest.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

In "Rock-a-Hula Ted" (Father Ted, series 2, 1996), Ted is a judge at the Lovely Girls Festival, a parody of the Rose of Tralee, held in a tent on Craggy Island. The contestants parade round traffic cones for the walking round, and Ted, compering into the microphone, picks out one girl by name and remarks on her bottom. Father Liam hurries over to warn him he might offend the girls, and Ted covers by saying they all have lovely ones. Later Liam shows him a newspaper headline about it.
