Father Ted

Oh God, we're in the Lingerie! Dougal. We're in Lingerie!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Ted's panic is a priest's nightmare: a scandal needs no wrongdoing, just the wrong shelf and a witness. Dougal's innocent reply gives the scene its comic rhythm, with Ted frantic and Dougal baffled. Fans quote it for any moment of walking into the wrong place with the wrong face on, and for the whole sequence's tangled bureaucracy of priests trying to escape.

Spoilers for Father TedShow the scene

In "A Christmassy Ted" (24 December 1996), Ted and Dougal go Christmas shopping and, leaving Father Jack in the kiddie playland, wander into the largest lingerie section in Ireland. Ted whispers his horrified line to Dougal, who asks where the problem is. Ted and Dougal then run into six other lost priests. Ted's plan is to have the priest with the dullest voice announce over the intercom that the store is closing, so the customers all leave and the priests can slip out. The rescue earns Ted the Golden Cleric award.
