To alcohol - the cause of, and solution to all of life's problems.
— The Simpsons · 1989
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The toast gives alcohol two incompatible roles at once: it creates the difficulties for which it is then praised as a remedy. Its sweeping reference to every problem makes the contradiction larger. The celebration rests on a circular account in which the supposed solution helps produce its own need.
